I’m happy to be back, if you hadn’t noticed, I guess you won’t notice that I’m back. Just a quick update, BCC Super Mall has been through a complete makeover, mostly for reasons beyond my control. I had the misfortune of being infected with a virus, well not me, but my workstation. This should not have been a major problem if my so call backup would have worked the way it was advertised! The only reason I’m even bringing this up, is to forewarn anyone using an online Data Backup system. I have become even more cynical of all the claims most Web services make. Anyone who has had a Virus or Trojan knows that the only way to clean their machine is to return the machine to its original factory settings by wiping the hard drive clean and then reinstalling the OS and Drivers. This of course removes all your Data, pictures, movies, etc. Anyone who has had this happen before now knows that a safe and secure backup system is imperative, well I did, or at least I thought I did. Now, let me explain, I had this happen once before, that time I was using an external hard drive that synchronized as I worked, supposedly keeping all my data safe, well it synchronized the virus as well, thus rendering it useless too. Well, that lesson I had though, was learned well, (HA!). Now I will try to explain, since I’m a loyal Dell user, and I had been overwhelmed with email ads for Dell’s Data Safe Online, I decided to enroll in their program. Data Safe Online was easy to set up, easy to schedule for weekly backup and for the most part very useful, at least until I actually had to recover my data! First, I installed my OS from the recovery disk, and then I reinstalled all the drivers, programs and hardware. My next step was to go online and download all the programs and software I had added as downloads. Then I needed to have all the updates from Windows and Dell that had been issued since my machine arrived, (these updates were downloaded over time as I used my Machine) but were not included on any disks. This process took about 56 working hours, but now I have arrived at a place where I can now recover my data. Guess again! Data Safe Online has a 2” x 2” desk top window to view your data files in, so I was unable to pick out the very important files I wanted first. So I figured I just recover all my files and data, well that was not going to work because my download time was going to be 9 days, not acceptable! Next I went straight to the Web-Site where I could at least look at the files, however if I wanted to pick and choose only certain files, they needed 23 days to prepare and download; again not acceptable! I now had reached a level of frustration that rendered me stupid!! After taking about 17 hours to rest and calm down, I contacted tech support, now this was my biggest mistake, tech support tells me they do not have any control over the Data Safe Online system, they would however would be happy to check out my machine to find out why I’m having so much trouble, one catch, my service agreement had expired, so I would have to pay $39.95 per session. I’ll be polite and not tell you what I told him to do. Now I’m on the phone, I’m being transferred from department to department, I could have written this entire sentence with a hammer and # 5 cold chisel in the time it took to transfer me each time, but I was mad and I wasn’t going to hang up! After 3 ½ hours, I finally ended up at the sales department where they asked me for my credit card number. Now I really don’t know where the people are located whom I talked to, but I’m really glad I wasn’t near Austin. Well this is not where it ended, but Data Safe Online been upgraded several times since then and is now very user friendly. One final comment, I went ahead and just took the whole 9 days to download my entire backup, but 1237 files they chose to keep. I hope you never go through this.
